Is the Yukatan Peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico shaped the way it is because it is the remains of the crater formed by the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs?

It is possible that the Yukatan Peninsula is the remains of a very large impact crater. Impact craters form when lumps of rock floating in space collide with the solid planets. Until about 4 billion years ago there was a lot of debris in the Solar System left over from when the planets were formed. This debris gradually hit the planets until there was none left. Every time a bit of rock hit the Earth, for example, an impact crater was formed. This is similar to the splash formed when a pebble is thrown into a pond. In this case though, because the rock is solid, the 'splash' remains leaving a gapping hole in the ground. The Moon is covered with these craters of various sizes. On the Earth, however, erosion by the wind and the rain has destroyed almost all of the craters. Because of this erosion, it is difficult to tell whether or not the Yukatan Peninsula is or is not an impact crater. It is also difficult to tell if it was responsible for wiping out the dinosaurs. One theory is that an impact as large as that required to form the Yukatan Peninsula would have thrown a lot a dust into the atmosphere. This would have blocked out the light from the Sun and cooled the Earth down. Dinosaurs would have been gradually killed off by this fall in temperature. Another theory suggests that a large volcanic eruption wiped out the dinosaurs. There is lots of research into this subject going on at the moment. Eventually an answer might be found.
