How many species of dinosaurs were there?

Dinosaurs lived for about 160 million years on Earth. A small percentage were preserved as fossils. So far we have recovered about 1300 different types of dinosaur - not all are known from complete skeletons, many are known from very scrappy bits and pieces. But this is just a fraction of the number of species that might have existed in that enormous span of time.
