How intelligent were dinosaurs?

It is impossible to say precisely, however it is possible to measure the approximate size of the cavity where the brain sat inside the head in many dinosaurs; this was done by Dr James Hopson from Chicago. Allowing for the gaps around the outside, and for various other facts, and then comparing the size of the brain with other animals, it emerges that the majority of dinosaurs had the brain power expected of an a average reptile - neither overly bright, nor particularly stupid. This observation even applies to the supposedly very stupid dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus with its walnut-sized brain. There are however some dinosaurs, particularly the smaller, highly active predators, which seem to have brains that are larger than might be expected. Some such as the dromaeosaurs (Velociraptor, Deinonychus) and the troodonts Troodon, Saurornithoides) had brains equal in size to those of modern birds. This implies quite high intelligence, which may well fit with the way of life of a resourceful and active predator.
