What was the texture of the skin of dinosaurs?
Dinosaur skin is preserved in a number of species, and in general terms, the skin seems to have been rather similar to that of modern reptiles, covered in many instances in very small overlapping scales. In some cases the scales may be quite large and separated from one another, so that the skin is tough yet flexible. In the most extreme examples - the armoured dinosaurs or ankylosaurs - the skin consists of large plates of bone studded with spikes, which are welded together to form a solid sheet in some instances.
